Most "best AI tools" lists are written for people with a US credit card and a corporate budget. This one is not. Everything below has a usable free tier and does not require a paid international card to start.
For studying and understanding
- ChatGPT / Gemini / Claude free tiers — pick one and use it as your default explainer. Ask it to explain a concept "at three levels of depth" rather than just once.
- NotebookLM — upload your own PDFs, notes and slides, then ask questions grounded in those documents. This is the single most useful free tool for exam preparation, because it cites your own material instead of the open internet.
- Perplexity — better than a plain chatbot when you want an answer with sources you can actually check.
For writing and assignments
- Grammarly free — catches grammar and clarity issues as you type.
- DeepL — noticeably better than most free translators for English to Indian languages and back, useful for reading papers written in other languages.
- Zotero — not AI, but it handles citations and integrates with most AI writing tools. Combined with a chat model it saves hours per project.
For coding and projects
- GitHub Copilot free tier — autocomplete inside VS Code, with a monthly cap that is generous enough for coursework.
- Cursor free tier — an editor with the model built in. Good if you are building a project rather than solving exercises.
- Google Colab free — free GPU hours. Enough to train small models and run most tutorials.
For notes and organisation
- Notion free — the free personal plan is enough for a full semester, and its AI add-on is optional.
- Obsidian — local-first notes with a strong plugin ecosystem. Your notes stay on your machine.
For presentations and design
- Canva free — templates plus a limited set of AI features.
- Excalidraw — fast hand-drawn-style diagrams for assignments and explanations.
Three habits that matter more than the tools
- Verify everything you submit. Models still produce confident, wrong citations and numbers. If you cannot find the source, do not use the claim.
- Use AI to learn, not to skip learning. The students who get ahead ask the model to quiz them, not to write for them.
- Keep one folder of your own good prompts. Your reusable prompts will save you more time than any new app.
Most of these tools cost nothing and require no card. The constraint is not access any more — it is knowing what to ask for.
